Rhodes University is a province aged-university located in Makhanda (Grahamstown). The University is amongst one of the four universities in the province and the oldest for that matter established in 1904 making it the sixth oldest University in South Africa.

The University, a public research university, was first called Rhodes University College named after one Cecil Rhodes by a virtue of a loan from the Rhodes Trust. In 1918, it became a part of the University of South Africa before standing on its own in 1951.

For Bachelor Degree qualification, learners are required to take seven subjects four of which are compulsory. They are supposed to pass four of the subjects with an achievement rating of 4 (adequate achievement rate 50%-59%).

How to Apply at Rhodes University

Before any prospect decides to apply to RU, they should first have;

  1. A valid email address for the completion of the application
  2. A South African identification number of  a South African National or a passport number if applying as an international student
  3. You need to have registered for the NBTs
  4. Payment of application fee
  5. If you need accommodation, you need to make the clear
  6. Do not forget to check faculties for their minimum entry requirement
  7. It must be noted that Postgraduates will be able to apply online only
  8. A copy of results from your latest school year
  9. A transcript from any higher education if applicable

Applying as an International Student, you need these;

  1. A valid study visa

Application Fee at Rhodes University

Applicants need to pay R100 as their application fee before their application will be processed. This fee is non-refundable and in no way guarantees admission.

If the application fee is paid after the deadline, the application will be considered a late application.

Registration Fee at Rhodes University

The registration fee at RU in 2022 is R800. The registration fee is non-refundable.

To Register as a South African National, you need;

  • Your student number.
  • Official school results copy will be needed.
  • Document showing there are no arrears in registration fee. 
  • Cash deposited in the University’s account must be presented. (deposit slip)
  • If you have been awarded a bursary, a copy of your letter of the award should have been faxed through to the Fees Office.
  • School leavers: Your final NSC/ A level / HIGCSE results.
  • Transferring students: Your transcript from your previous university and course outlines.

To Register as an International Student;

  • Proof of Initial Fee (IF) clearance by no later than 21 January 2022.
  • Passport with a valid study visa to study specifically at Rhodes University.
  • A medical aid membership certificate, which can be verified by Consultants, Simeka Health (Pty) Ltd
  • If your A-level or HIGCSE results are not yet available by the time of registration, you will NOT be allowed to register until your results are available. If you have pre-registered – your pre-registration confirmation number

Does Rhodes University Accept NSFAS

NSFAS is an abbreviation of the National Student’s Financial Aid Scheme. A government student bursary and loan scheme. It raises funds to fund students’ bursaries and loans.

A South African national is eligible to apply for an NSFAS loan. An applicant who has registered or is planning to register at Rhodes for a formal first tertiary educational qualification example as Honors, Masters, and Doctorate Degrees.
